Pinar del Rio, July 12, 2004 -- Cuban scientists announced the discovery
Sunday of two new species of orchid believed to be exclusive to the
westernmost Cuban province of Pinar del Rio. Director of the Orchid
Garden at Soroa in Pinar del Rio, Pedro Pablo Rivero announced that
the two species were found in the dense tropical vegetation of the Sierra
del Rosario national park and the Guanahacabibes Peninsula protected
area. The species are Encyclia Bocourtii, found in coastal woodland
in Cape San Antonio and Encyclia Rosariensis, found in the forests of
the Sierra national park. The largely rural Pinar del Río province is
home to one third of the Cuban orchid population many of which are protected
in the award winning garden at Soroa.
